Hypnosis and hypnotherapy have been used for nearly 200 years to provide physical and psychological comfort to people diagnosed with cancer – Provided today through Hypno Oncology, Holistic Complementary Cancer Care
PSYCOLOGICAL & PHYSICAL ISSUES
As a working professional therapist in Essex, over the years I have witnessed many of the ways complementary hypno oncology therapies can help. Some of the psychological issues that people experience relate to their self-identity – Feeling different to other people, not knowing who they are anymore, their perception of the self change – Especially if they have suffered any surgical or medical procedure, as the physical self has actually changed. In the case of women diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer, they might also question their identity as a woman. They might have negative thoughts about their body image and about their self-worth
SELF BLAME
Another issue that some people experience is blaming themselves for the cancer. They might think that they brought the cancer on, either by thought or as punishment for something they had done in the past. They might even go as far as searching for past experience to find an explanation on why them.
ISOLATION & FRUSTRATION
Another problem that some of these patients suffer is social isolation; I’ve had a client recently who was not allowed to speak about her illness to close family members and was even not allowed to cry, but they expected her to be upbeat and positive at all times. In my first session, I said to her: ‘Here in this space there aren’t any topics that off limits; you can talk about whatever you want and you cry as much or as little as you need’. It is not surprising she took advantage of that opportunity to let go of all her frustrations and her anxiety about her illness, possible imminent death, physical deterioration, frustrations with other people, etc; she did cry for the most part of that first session. And from then on, it went uphill, feeling more and more optimistic, relaxed and peaceful as the sessions progressed.
In some cases this social isolation acts as a form of protecting the ‘self’ and can lead to a lack of emotional support.
How can Hypnotherapy – Holistic Complementary Cancer Care Help?
In almost all sessions I teach my clients self-hypnosis so that they can use imagery and creative visualization to enhance their immune system and to control their stress response. The importance of visualization has been demonstrated in numerous studies where their effects on the immune system and the health were superior to other techniques that didn’t use this component.
One of the main advantages of hypnotherapy is the lack of any negative side-effects; it also brings a sense of control and empowerment to the patients.

Instead of handing control to another person they felt as though they were active agents in their own ‘treatment’. They are better able to deal with pain, anxiety and interrupted sleep by rephrasing the cause, that enables them to get a better understanding of their illness and how they can help in their healing process.
Here’s just one testimonial of patients who participated in a study on the use of complementary hypno oncology treatment for breast cancer:
It has given me time to stop and think of it, not just at a biological level, you know, doctors doing this chemotherapy . . . approaching cancer in a different way. I’m more in control, telling my body what it’s got to do.
Catherine
During those studies all the participants perceived a greater sense of control and empowerment that helped them to take control of their lives again.
All participants reported no negative effects. Therefore it is not surprising that their reactions were very positive.
They reported that this non pharmaceutical intervention helped them to have positive attitudes and to enhance their ability to cope with the illness and have a better quality of life in general.
As a certified hypnotherapist my hope for the future is that Hypnotherapy is considered an integrative treatment along with other conventional treatments to improve the cancer patients’ quality of life.
